FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREENING

Functional Movement Screening (FMS) is a system of multiple tests used to evaluate the movement patterns of individuals or athletes. This can be used to determine deficits or dysfunctions that may sometimes be overlooked just from a simple injury assessment.

The usual issues that will be identified within this screening process are muscle imbalances, muscle flexibility and movement compensations. These are identified by the indivdual being placed into extreme positions that would replicate similar positions required in activity. This is where weaknesses and imbalances will become most noticeable if the body cannot use the appropriate stability and mobility.

The tests that could be used within this screening session could include:

  • Deep Squat
  • Hurdle Step (As shown in the photo)
  • In-line Lunge
  • Shoulder Mobility
  • Active Straight Leg Raise
  • Trunk Stability Push Up
  • Rotary Stability

During this screening, each movement will be scored to create a individual profile that will then be used to guide the rehabilitation plan moving forward. If we can reduce the risk factors and identify the deficits/dysfunction before injury occurs then it significantly decreases the chances of injuries and increases the chances of improved performance within activity.
